Featuring the vibrant artwork of award-winning artist Mark Evans, Witches Tarot is the perfect combination of Tarot and the Craft. Created by highly respected Witch and Tarot reader Ellen Dugan along with Mark Evans combines classic pagan symbolism with that of the traditional tarot structure based on the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Filled with images that speak to today's magickal practitioner where witchcraft takes center stage in this stunning deck.
With subtle pagan imagery the Witches Tarot is strongly rooted in the RWS system. The depictions of plants and animals are given significant focus to add a natural energy to the deck. Having a much larger variety plant life than the traditional Rider Waite Tarot; herbs, flowers, trees, and stones are used to depict divinatory elements in each of cards. The deck incorporates mythical imagery, as well as birds and various animals not found in the standard RWS tarot.
Here, the Hierophant becomes the High Priest, Wheel of Fortune becomes Wheel of the Year, and Judgement becomes Karma, and the Judgement card is renamed ‘Karma.’ These variations compliment the energy of Witches Tarot which seeks to move away from the often prevalent patriarchal and Judeo-Christian themes often utilized in more traditional decks and systems. The Creator Ellen Dugan has spoken previously that each card has a personal story by which she imbued energies into. This deck truly activates and comes alive during the festivals of the Wheel of the Year and late at night upon the witching hour. These alone confirm the aptly named Witches Tarot Deck as one of truly complimentary energy for the practicing occultist and reader. Ellen’s inclusion within the suits specific motifs such as Water imagery for the Cups, Fairies for the Swords, Trees and tree branches for the Wands, and Gold elements used throughout the suit of Pentacles. Despite silver being associated with Goddess energies and the ruling Goddess energies of the Earth and Moon, Dugan went with the more potent Gold/God association for the Pentacles.
The Witches Tarot is accompanied by a 200 plus page book written by Ellen Dugan where she details the divinatory meanings and associations of the cards. The art is produced using modern digital imagery and is done with very rich and striking colors throughout. The art uses multiple characterizations within the deck as per design according to Ellen. In part this enhances the 22 Major Arcana affording them prominence where they stand out stylistically from the Minors. The card backs are very attractive with the Pagan/Wiccan symbol for the Triple Goddess, the triune of Maiden, Mother, and Crone centered on the card.
With a medium finish, these cards represent the standard quality of the Llewellyn tarot decks. The companion book includes descriptions of cards which can be used in spells for magickal studies and various coven craft. In all, a fine deck for the practicing green witch or readers who expand their collections for the purposes of connecting with spirit through symbiology and divinatory energies.
