In all honesty one of the most unique creations in the world tarot to date, the Antique Anatomy Tarot deck comes to us from the Black and the Moon Studios and artist Claire Goodchild. The foil stamped keepsake box includes seventy eight cards of the tarot and 80 page accompanying guidebook.
The art on the cards of the Antique Anatomy Tarot are collages of flowers, plants mixed with anatomical drawings in subdued colors. Goodchild describes each of the seventy eight cards, giving their divinatory meaning and details on laying out spreads such as the Celtic Cross and the Moon Cycle Spreads. The guidebook goes into great detail on the astrological alignments with each card, elemental and numerological associations as well. This is powerful information for any reader to have and assists newcomers to the tarot in their interpretations. The deck is printed lighter card stock which is has garnered significant criticism but the quality of the artwork is the principle aspect that has kept this set in the collectable category. The deck is usable even with the quite thin card stock on which it is printed and is included in many readers collections but just as often for the stunning and unique imagery. Some readers and tarot enthusiasts prefer a thinner card stock and it is simply recommended to shuffle the cards lightly and remember that there has long been a variety of thickness in the paper used within tarot and oracle card production, and is regularly a choice made by the creator for the sake of the artwork and the overall aesthetic of the deck. Including the simple but esoteric design on the card backs the art is what adds value to this set of tarot cards.
Similar to the Black and the Moon Oracle of Oddities except this time with seventy eight cards in the traditional tarot format. There is frequent skull anatomy imagery throughout the deck, mixed with elixir bottles, various human organs, and the vivisection of the same kind. The colors used in the various plants and flowers are brilliant and evoke living energy in their artistry, this is counter balanced with the subdued almost black and white images of anatomical depictions. The suit of cups has become tonics and elixirs, swords become blades, pentacles become coins (a common rendition within tarot) whereas wands have become rods (of the antique medical variety). This is a highly collectable deck and one that contains a fun energy which is enjoyable in and of itself.
